Management process

The Steering Group
The Steering Group is made up of representatives of the main public agencies that have management responsibilities for the Site.

It prepared the Management Plan, champions it and carries forward its implementation.

The Steering Group meets every three months. Most of the officers and organisations represented on the Steering Group have remained constant since 2002.

In 2005 the membership was extended to include the members of the World Heritage Marketing Task Force that had originally been established to raise the profile of the bid.

The World Heritage Officer
The World Heritage Officer is employed by Liverpool City Council in the Conservation Team of the Planning Service, with the day-to-day responsibility for ensuring that World Heritage issues are fully considered.

Planning policies
No additional statutory controls are imposed by the inscription of the World Heritage Site, but protection for the Site is in place through the existing planning framework but when Liverpool was inscribed, an undertaking was given that any future development would respect the Site's integrity.

Planning proposals and issues in the World Heritage Site are subject to the normal planning process, but the inscription has raised the importance of achieving standards of excellence in the conservation and enhancement of the historic environment and the design of new development.

The Liverpool Unitary Development Plan (UDP) contains the approved planning policies for the whole of the city, including policies which aim to protect and enhance the built heritage of the city as well as achieving high standards of urban design and promoting economic regeneration.

The City Council is in the process of developing its Local Development Framework, which will replace the UDP in mid-2009.

Liverpool City Council is the Local Planning Authority for the World Heritage Site. For more information on its role please visit www.liverpool.gov.uk/environment/planning.
