In this section of the website you can get a real flavour of the historical and architectural treasures the Liverpool World Heritage Site holds, and how you can visit and study them.

Liverpool is an historic city of international significance. Evidence of world trade, the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, mass European emigration and the growth of the British Empire is clearly evident in the streets, buildings and unique landscape of the city.

Walking around the World Heritage Site reveals six areas of distinctive townscape character.

Different guides, trails and facilities are available to help visitors and residents to understand the dynamics of the city.

The World Heritage Site is only one facet in the rich cultural attractions of Liverpool, which include two of the world's greatest 20th Century cathedrals and four National Trust properties.

Liverpool has a year-round calendar of sporting and cultural events, such as the Grand National in April, the Africa Oye Festival and River Festival in June and the Mathew Street Festival in August, adding vitality and variety to the historic environment.

Heritage Open days in September provide an exciting opportunity to gain access to the interiors of many private historic buildings and go on specially organised tours.

The World Museum Liverpool, The Walker Art Gallery, The Conservation Centre, The Maritime Museum and the forthcoming Museum of Liverpool are all run by the National Museums Liverpool and are all in the WHS and provide a fascinating insight into the city and is links to the world.

Use our events search to view find out what's going on in the city in the coming days and months. Corporate, boutique, themed and budget hotels can be booked along with youth hostels and bed and breakfast accommodation.

All options are available either within the World Heritage Site or within easy walking distance of it.
